FIRST LOOK: DYU 20” FOLDING CITY eBIKE
Direct sales of urban E-commuters are nothing short of a smorgasbord. Quality seems to be the “elephant in the room” that people look past when they see the price of most internet bikes. It can be almost impossible to know what kind of product you’re actually getting.
We’ve just unboxed the DYU e-bike and our first impression might have a lot of people surprised. Granted we have only put a mile on it before writing this. We are intrigued with some of the features.
The DYU comes as a fixie meaning it is limited to one middle range gear. This would be annoying if you were on faster, more open bike paths. Point is that at about 13-15mph your legs are already at 110rpm. The thing is that in the crowded city or on sidewalks you don’t need much speed. You will however get the assistance, which after all is why you would get an e-bike in the first place.
There is a key that locks the battery (which doubles as the seat post) that acts as theft security. There is another key that engages a pin through the disc brake so when you are parked at a coffee shop, it won’t roll freely unless the pin is unlocked. Features like this may not totally prevent theft but we are happy to see companies come up with clever deterrents such as these.
THE DYU eBIKE
As we would expect the DYU comes with a hub-driven motor in the 20” rear wheel. The big difference in this bike is the torque sensor that is missing in most e-bikes at this price point. Right away we could feel the power kick in as we put our foot on the pedal. As opposed to waiting for the cranks to make a full revolution before giving assistance. It adds to the value of the bike because it gives a more natural feel.
You’ll get cable-actuated disc brakes and at a top speed of 15.5mph, they’re sufficient enough. The battery is a 36v, 5A battery and is estimated to have a 25-38 mile range. We’ll make sure to do some testing to see if we can get that range. A suspension fork makes the ride a little smoother and will minimize vibration and abuse on the bike in general.
LET THE TESTING BEGIN
We are excited to put some hours into testing and see just what we can get out of this bike. It has some nice features and for the money, could be a fair option for smaller urban areas where top speed isn’t as crucial. Just after riding it in the parking lot, we can tell it has some promise. Stay on the lookout for a first look YouTube video and full review to follow.
